Experience the breathtaking views of the high Himalayan peaks as you fly into Paro valley (2,200 meters) where you can get the first glimpse of this magical country. After the visa formalities at Paro airport, meet your personal guide and driver.
Discover the mountains speckled with sacred temples and monasteries as you drive from Paro to Thimphu.
On the way stop at Tachhog Lhakhang (the Iron Chain Bridge), a temple located across the famous iron chain bridge built over the meandering Pa Chhu (Paro River). Immerse yourself in the invigorating ambience of the medieval surrounding. The cool-sweeping breeze and bright colored prayer flags are a feast to the eye.
Upon arriving Thimphu (2,300 meters), check in your hotel and freshen up before visiting the exquisite massive structure of Thimphu Tashichoe Dzong—a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture.
Visit the local archery ground where locals celebrate the national sport with dance and song with every hit.
Take a stroll in the evening around Thimphu town and absorb the magical atmosphere of the capital city while capturing the sight of contemporary Bhutanese life.
Buddha Dordenma: Capture the vibrant Buddha Dordenma statue in the early morning sunrise. Apart from the serenity of the place, the view of Thimphu city from this mountain is gorgeous.
Wangditse Hike (1.5 hours): Venture through the flavors and scents of thick pine forest along the side of Thimphu valley leading to the glorious Wangditse temple. This easy hike crosses local apple farms and houses. The trail further takes you through trees of oak, pine, and rhododendron, occasionally opening to views of Buddha Dordenma statue, Tashichoe Dzong, and Thimphu valley.
On the way back to Thimphu, visit the Buddhist College of astrology at Pangrizampa before visiting the temple of the 21 Tara Devi in a serene setting next to it.
Visit Paper Making Factory and Farmers market.
Rest of the day free to explore Thimphu on your own or relax at your hotel.
Drive over the Dochu-La pass (3,100 meters), which on a clear day offers an incredible view of Himalayan peaks before descending into the balmy Punakha valley (about 3 hours total driving time). The drive through the countryside affords a glimpse of everyday life in this most remote of Himalayan kingdoms. In the Dochu-La area, there are vast Rhododendron forests that grow to tree size and bloom in late April/early May, covering the mountains in glorious spring color.
Punakha was the ancient capital of Bhutan. On arrival, visit Punakha Dzong, the Palace of Great Happiness built in 1637 by the Shabdrung. It is situated at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu (Mother and Father Rivers) and is the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo and hundreds of monks. The three-story main temple is a breathtaking example of traditional architecture with four intricately embossed entrance pillars crafted from cypress and decorated in gold and silver. It was here on 17th December 1907 that Bhutan’s first king was crowned.
Visit the longest suspension bridge in the country.
The remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight at hotel in Punakha.
Today you will enjoy your traditional Bhutanese wedding at Chimi Lhakhang, temple of the Drukpa Kuenly, also known as the Divine Madman. He inherited this title for revolting against orthodox Buddhism in his time, teaching that religion is an inner feeling and not requiring ordained monkhood. He is also considered a symbol of fertility, and many Bhutanese childless couples visit his temple for blessings.
The traditional marriage ceremony will be performed in authentic Bhutanese fashion by the monks. The couple will sit near the monks who intone the marriage ritual, blessing you for happiness, togetherness, long life, and wealth. The couple will exchange cups of alcohol, after which they will be declared man and wife. Guests will offer white scarves (khaddar) from the monastery and by the head monk, followed by local people offering the couple khaddar and gifts.
Following the ceremony, you will return to your hotel to celebrate your traditional Bhutanese wedding. Overnight at hotel in Punakha.
Travel from Punakha to Paro. Elevation at Paro is 2,200 meters.
Paro is a beautiful valley located in Western Bhutan with an area of 2,800 square kilometers. Breathtaking Lhakhangs and monasteries are perched on mountain hills. Two sacred rivers with sources at Jumolhari and Chumo Phug Mountains make their way through Paro valley, enhancing its beauty and grandeur.
Visit the ancient Kichu Lhakhang, which dates back to the 7th century.
Visit Namgay Artisanal Brewery in an authentic Bhutanese setting and try different flavors of local beer.
Take a stroll through Paro town, a street of typical Bhutanese traditional buildings.
Zuri Hike: An easy 1–2 hour trek leading to the 14th-century Zuri Dzong, one of the country’s oldest fortresses. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Paro Valley, Rinpung Dzong, and surrounding Himalayan peaks. The trail passes through pine and cypress forests, making it a peaceful, scenic, and popular shorter hike.
Visit the National Museum, Ta Dzong. This museum houses many religious relics, works of art, and handicrafts, offering great orientation into Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past.
Visit Rinpung Dzong to see the painting of the great saint Milarepa, considered the master of meditation by the Bhutanese and believed to have attained enlightenment in a lifetime, and walk to the beautiful cantilever bridge still in use.
In the evening, visit Drukgyel Dzong (Fortress of the Victorious Drukpas), a historic 17th-century Bhutanese fortress built in 1649 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate victory over Tibetan invaders. Though destroyed by fire in 1951, this UNESCO tentative site is currently under major restoration. It historically served as a critical defensive base.
We have saved the best for last. Get your energy up at breakfast this morning for a hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery.
Hike up to Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang)—one of Bhutan’s most revered pilgrim sites. Be rewarded with the overwhelming sight of the monastery perched on a cliff at 3,120 meters above sea level and 900 meters above Paro valley.
Tiger’s Nest acquires its name from the legend of its foundation. In the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche, widely revered as the second Buddha, arrived from Tibet flying across the mountains on the back of a tigress and meditated here for three months. He blessed and preached tantric Buddhism in Bhutan.
Our team will drop you at the airport and bid you farewell.
